The Rooftops of North London with The City Skyscrapers Beyond

I captured this captivating view in the middle of winter, at noon, when the sun was low in the sky. I wanted it to be right in front of me, so that I was shooting in effect a silhouette. I loved the geometrical shape and contours of the rooftops in the foreground, and also how the distant skyscrapers of The City appeared as mirages. Photographing directly into the sun is not normally recommended, but it is something that I particularly love to do. You need an exacting technique, and to use only fixed focal length prime lenses, as their more simple optical design enables them to be used without all of the flaring and ghosting that you commonly get if you shoot directly into the light with zoom lenses. Furthermore, a considerable amount of post production editing is required in order to coax out of the image the richness of tonal contrasts that you see here. The colours are very much muted and suppressed, so it appears almost like a black and white image, but what I love about his image is the huge amount of drama and emotion created by its heightened, punchy tones.
