This piece is touching upon the divinity of the Asian Elephant, which is shown in the henna style markings in gold leaf all over the elephant. The Asian Elephant is an endangered species, which is hinted at in the upwards drips of the animal fading into the ether. When used in Asian cultures, the elephant is a symbol of good luck, happiness and longevity. They also admire the elephant’s memory and high intelligence, and use the symbol for some of their Gods such as Ganesh, often depicted as an elephant and is a Hindu symbol of wisdom.
