Description
For this work, the artist drew inspiration from a scene at the market in the small Andalusian village where she lives. An an elderly woman touching the belly of a pregnant young woman. She translated this fleeting gesture into the timeless, evocative presence of these elongated, almost translucent figures. The sparse use of colour, along with the powerful contrast between the engraved wall and the silent figures, give the scene a timeless, almost surreal reality. Pauwels builds up her pieces through several layers of sand, newsprint and paint, always leaving carefully chosen text layers visible which are relevant to the work. The strength of this piece lies in its ambiguity, which allows the viewer to interpret the narrative in different ways.
