Black bodies have always been in a complex and unique place within the realms of western mainstream media. Simultaneously erased and fetishized, the constant inaccurate and stereotyped depiction of those with dark skin has led to it being seen as an inconvenience or a burden by the dark skinned folks who everyday have to deal with the consequences of such depictions in the media. “Opposition” is a series that is aimed to highlight and celebrate a dark skin that is very often negatively depicted in the media. Through technical minimalism and restraint, the contrast between the model’s skin colour and her environment forces the viewers to focus on looking at what really matters in these images: the darkness of her skin tone. While the word Opposition is reminiscent of the contrast between the black and the white in the photos, it also means standing against the common misconceptions and stereotypes associated with dark skin while celebrating and embracing it.
