Description
One of the first pieces to be made in the artist’s new studio in Peckham in 2015. It clashes Cahills interest in the anonymous with his growing interest in control and structure. Mat creates the grid in his studio prior to sitting in cafes across london quickly sketching passer-bys. This piece presents a grid-like motif on which the artist wants to slot the passing people into as a form of categorisation. The result is an awkward and less structured composition. Cahill links the visual outcome to how he feels in his role as an educator where he feels pressured to place individuals into situations which are not suitable for the individual just to gain results for the system.
