Description
This piece depicting the artist’s boyfriend and dog was painted shortly after a visit to a Shchukin Collection exhibition in Paris where Vandoorne saw the works of Matisse, Gauguin and Picasso amongst many others. There is something Matisse-esque about the stillness of the pose and the use of patterned fabrics. Here we are unsure which one of the two sitters is the reluctant one, could it be both? Vandoorne believes colour and nature can nearly always be found at the centre of her work. This portrait may be a step away from her usual mixed media pieces, but the use of patterns, fabrics and textures remains in keeping with the artist’s references to design and nature (note the plant in the bottom right hand corner).
