Description
A 4-layer, 5 colour multi-block print of some Surfers riding the crest of a wave while nature whirls it’s wild dance around them. Takahashi uses a labour intensive, time-consuming process known as multi-block linocut printing. It involves designing an image, separating out the colours and transferring each ‘layer’ on to a separate lino block – the kind of tiling used for kitchen floors. She then carefully carves the shapes out using sharp cutting tools, and then inks them up and prints them using a 100 year old Albion press. Linocut prints have been around for approximately 100 years, and the textures and colours that can be achieved with this medium are like no other. Takahashi’s prints are the latest in a long line of well respected artists such as Edward Bawden, Michael Rothenstein and the Grosvenor School, who adored printing with lino.
