Description

This work was part of ‘The Tale of Two Lives’, Nick Malone’s most recent exhibition at the Art Bermondsey Project Space in London, which explored the nature of identity and change between inner and outer worlds, crossing art forms with multiple planes, soundscape and narrative that opened into each other in different ways: The larger, three-dimensional works of burnt wood and drawing engaged with an inner mythology through dissolving planes; other works, such as the ‘Disappearance’ and ‘Interface’ paintings, involved near-abstraction, while yet others, such as the ‘Metamorphosis’ series, invoked a hybrid realism. However all the works were pulled together by the broken narrative of ‘The Disappearance of Makepeace – A Tale of Two Lives’, that gave the exhibition its name, a graphic novel Nick Malone has just begun, where the interaction of inner and outer worlds were explored with text and paint through soundscape and windows cut into the pages of sketchbooks and journals. The actual process of crossing different art forms and materials in the exploration of the issues described is a major part of this current project.
